Why Your Business Disappears From Google Maps Two Miles From Your Office

By Jason Herbert · August 7, 2026

Here is something most agencies will not show you: their own rankings.

I am going to, because the numbers make a point I cannot make any other way. When you search your own business name and see yourself at the top, that is not your ranking. That is your ranking from where you are standing. Move two miles and it changes completely.

Let me show you exactly how much.

What a rank grid actually is

A rank grid checks your position from a lot of different physical locations instead of one. We run a five by five grid, one mile between each point, and we search the same term from all 25 spots. That gives you 25 answers instead of one, and the picture it paints is nothing like what you see from your desk.

Here is ours for “queen creek seo”, pulled on August 7th, 2026. Real data, no cleanup.

Rank grid for the search term queen creek seo, showing That Social Geek ranking 5 to 14 across the middle of the grid and not appearing at all in the top and bottom rows

Look at the top row and the bottom row. Not in the top 20. Gone.

Now look at the middle. Position 5, 7, 10, 13. Not great, but there.

Same business. Same day. Same search. Two miles apart.

The part that surprised me

I expected the numbers to fade as you moved away from the center. Strong in the middle, gradually weaker at the edges. That is how most people assume it works.

That is not what happened. It is not a fade. It is a cliff.

Row two is position 5 to 7. Row one, one mile further north, is nothing at all. There is no gradual decline in between. You are on the list, and then you are not.

That told me the drop is not about distance the way I assumed. Something changes at that line.

What is actually happening at the edges

When I checked who ranks at the north edge instead of us, the entire list had changed. Not shuffled. Changed. Businesses in Gilbert and Mesa, none of which appear in the Queen Creek results at all.

That makes sense once you see it. Two miles north of Queen Creek center, Google decides the person searching is closer to Gilbert, so it shows them Gilbert businesses. That row is not our race. It is a different town’s race that we happen to be standing next to.

The south edge is a different story, and it is the one that stings.

At the south edge, every business ranking above us has a Queen Creek street address. One of them has zero reviews. Three of them have one review. We have a five star rating and twelve reviews and nine years of work behind us, and we are not in the top 20.

That is not a content problem. A business with no reviews at all is beating us. The thing they have that we do not is a verified street address inside the city.

The one where we actually win

Not all of it is bad news, and the contrast is the useful part.

Rank grid for social media management queen creek, showing That Social Geek ranking first across most of the grid

Same grid. Same business. Same day. Position one almost everywhere in the middle band.

Why the difference? Because that term is what we are actually known for. Nine years of it, the reviews mention it, the website is built around it, and the Google Business Profile says it. Google has a lot of evidence pointing the same direction.

And notice the top and bottom rows are still empty. The thing we are best at in the world still stops at the city line.

What this means for you

Three things, and they apply whether you hire anyone or not.

Your ranking is not one number, so stop treating it like one. If someone shows you a screenshot of a single search and calls it a report, they are showing you the most flattering data point they could find. Ask where it was searched from. Ask what it looks like two miles away.

Proximity is doing more work than you think. For a local business, the physical pin on your Google Business Profile drives a lot of this. If you are a service area business with your address hidden, you are competing against businesses whose address is doing work yours cannot. That is not a reason to quit. It is a reason to be realistic about which battles are winnable.

Reviews and relevance can beat proximity, but only inside a radius. We are first for social media management across our whole core band. We are nowhere at the edges. That tells you what reviews and relevance buy you: they win the fights where you are already in the running. They do not put you in a fight you were never in.

What we are actually doing about it

Since I showed you the problem, it is only fair to show you the plan.

Reviews, from twelve toward forty. The competitor beating us in the wider area has 106. That gap is the whole ballgame outside our core band, and it is the slowest thing to fix, which is why it starts now.

The address question. Being a service area business with a hidden address has a cost, and the south row is that cost showing up in the data. That gets sorted out.

Getting the categories right. Our profile had two categories on it. Two. Meanwhile the businesses beating us were running three, four, nine. We were not even eligible to show up for searches we do every day.

Fixing the site, which was quietly broken. About a hundred internal links on this website pointed at a version of each URL that redirected instead of the real one. One of our best pages had never been crawled by Google. Not ranked badly. Never crawled. That got fixed the same week I found it.

I will run the grid again in a few weeks and post what happened, whether it worked or not.

Want to see yours?

This is the part of the free audit that people react to most, because it is the first time they see their real coverage instead of one search from their office chair. It is also usually the moment the conversation gets a lot more useful, because now we are looking at the same map.

If you would rather understand the fundamentals first, start with how to show up in the Google map pack or why your business might not be showing up on Google at all.

And if you take one thing from this: the next time somebody tells you they got you to number one, ask them to show you the grid.
